This fun, energetic class is specifically designed for children ages 3 – 4 with caregiver. By providing a solid music and preschool foundation, Poppies prepares students for success in our popular Let’s Play Music piano program, pre-K and Kindergarten!

This curriculum is organized into six non-sequential semesters, each lasting 15 weeks, and provides experience with important music concepts and skills through different songs and games. Classes include singing, movement, dancing, games, stories, and activities focusing on different concepts each semester. Rhythm instruments are used to help the child develop a good sense of beat and rhythm, and resonator bars and desk bells are used to introduce melody and harmony. Children get to experience some time at the piano, and we play our desk bells to teach beginning note reading and introduce the Solfege (do, re, mi) language. This skill is built upon throughout the year. We teach lots of American Sign Language as actions to songs, and the children build quite an impressive ASL vocabulary!

Each semester explores the elements of music: rhythm, pitch, harmony, form, dynamics and tone color. Specific concepts and skills taught include in-tune singing, timbre, beat, fast/slow, theme and form, counting, primary colors, name-recognition, and much more.

For those families with more than one child, we offer childcare during our Poppies classes, so you can drop off your other child while you attend class. We ask for a small donation ($5.00) to help us cover babysitter costs.

Further Benefits:

Researchers, teachers and parents are discovering that music education promotes:

  • Excellence in math
  • Increased ability to read
  • Decreased learning problems and discipline problems
  • Better social skills
  • Superior communication skills

If you have a young 3-year-old, and are trying to decide whether to enroll your child in Poppies, a good gauge to use is possibly this: Is your child “active”? A “runner”? Is he/she able to participate in group activities? Periwinkles is an excellent choice to prepare your active young 3 year old for Poppies. It is important that your child have good listening skills and is able to follow directions before enrolling in Poppies. If your child has limited preschool experience and you are questioning if he/she is ready for a more disciplined music class, we would recommend you enrolling in Periwinkles first, and the teacher can help you decide when your child is ready to move into the more structured Poppies class.

Poppies is an ideal option for parents of 4-year-olds who are unsure of their level of commitment to music education, and are not quite ready to make a commitment to Let’s Play Music. Because this class requires only a one semester commitment, parents can feel flexible with their commitment as they experiment with music education.

This is a delightful parent/child class in which the parent plays a vital role in the success of the child. The teacher coaches and guides the parent in helping the child during music and movement activities. The parent is the most important teacher in the young child’s life. We ask that the parents participate in class every other week (odd numbered classes). We offer childcare for those parents with additional children that need care during class times.
