Ages 2 1/2 Years Through 4 Years. This class is taught by the wonderful Jessica Davis!
This fun, energetic class is specifically designed for children ages 3 – 4. Poppies uses Sound Beginnings curriculum, which provides education through musical play! Poppies classes prepare students for success in our popular Let’s Play Music piano program, pre-K and Kindergarten!
Sound Beginnings is organized into six non-sequential semesters, each lasting 20 weeks, and provides experience with important music concepts, as well as Literacy and Kindergarten skills. We split the 20 weeks in half, offering two 10 week sessions. We ask for the full 10 week commitment.
Each semester provides the following:
Literacy and Kindergarten Skills: In class we read stories and practice our ABC’s and letter sounds.
Rhythm and Beat: We use our bodies and instruments to feel and perform a steady beat.
Vocal and Pitch Development: We sing! A lot! (Parents are encouraged and expected to sing, too! 🙂 We learn solfege (the do, re, mi language) along with the Curwen hand signs that go with each syllable.
Fine Motor Skills: We learn nursery rhymes with finger plays and practice making the ABC’s using American Sign Language.
Gross Motor Skills: Each week, we jump, dance, and move around to music
Classical Music Experience: Our ‘Smart Moves’ dances expose us to classical music and teach us to interpret it
Parent Bonding: This class is for children and their ‘grown up’ to enjoy together. During parent weeks, we focus on building and strengthening these relationships in class.
Each semester explores the elements of music: rhythm, pitch, harmony, form, dynamics and tone color. Specific concepts and skills taught include in-tune singing, timbre, beat, fast/slow, theme and form, counting, primary colors, name-recognition, and much more.
Our 2021 Spring Sessions will be Gold Stars! Our themes for Gold Stars are space and stars, Chinese, telling time, and traveling! Our semester instrument is finger cymbals.
If you have a young 3-year-old, and are trying to decide whether to enroll your child in Poppies, a good gauge to use is possibly this: Is your child “active”? A “runner”? Is he/she able to participate in group activities? Periwinkles is an excellent choice to prepare your active young 3 year old for Poppies. It is important that your child have good listening skills and is able to follow directions before enrolling in Poppies. If your child has limited preschool experience and you are questioning if he/she is ready for a more disciplined music class, we would recommend you enrolling in Periwinkles first, and the teacher can help you decide when your child is ready to move into the more structured Poppies class.
This is a delightful parent/child class in which the parent plays a vital role in the success of the child. The teacher coaches and guides the parent in helping the child during music and movement activities. The parent is the most important teacher in the young child’s life. We ask that the parents participate in class every week.
